    CAS Facilities & Controls Overview 20m
    
    The Centre for Accelerator Science maintains, develops, and operates currently four tandem accelerators primarily for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) and Ion Beam Analysis (IBA). In 1964 ANSTO or the AAEC at the time installed its first accelerator, the 3 Million Volt KN3000 single ended Van de Graff. Though now decommissioned, ANSTO continued to invest in tandem accelerator infrastructure now operating and maintaining a 10MV, 6MV, 2MV, and 1MV tandem accelerators. Given the expanse in time the tandem accelerator facilities have been installed and developed, CAS relies on and supports a variety of control systems which will be detailed within the presentation.

    Development of CAS-ASD Standards 20m
    
    Accelerators within CAS have operated since 1964 with our first accelerator, and now currently operate four tandem accelerators. This has represented all too common challenges to maintain facilities where whole beamlines may have been built by staff who have taken full freedom or design, and left the organisation with little to no documentation or support. This presentation will look at how todays Accelerator Systems and Development (ASD) group have taken on the challenge to harmonise mechanical, electrical, and control systems with a guide to standardise developments.

    Safety system for human imaging in IMBL beamline 10m
    
    A new clinical mode will be introduced in IMBL beamline at Australian Synchrotron to prepare the beamline for Breast CT experiments with human volunteers. To make sure that both volunteers and personnel are safe during the imaging, a safety system will be designed and implemented. The core of that safety system is called iPaSS (imaging Patient Safety System) and it will use the Siemens S7 1500F platform to control the experiment sequence, coordinate 4 different safety/positioning/control systems and stop the beam in less than 200 ms if dose rate is not correct.

    Personnel Safety Systems (PSS) at ANSTO-Australian Synchrotron utilise Safety PLCs to implement safety interlocks that protect the personnel against radiation and electrical hazards presented in accelerator areas and beamlines. The need to upgrade the legacy systems and develop new safety systems for expansion projects led to an overhaul of safety PLC platform design that will bring state-of the- art technology and associated benefits to the safety system in the facility.

    Enhanced ion beam injection for HIAF 20m
    
    Australia’s Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) at the Australian National University (ANU) is undertaking
    a project to upgrade its ion beam injection capabilities. This involves the installation of an electrostatic
    analyser (ESA) to be used with the existing MSNICS ion source and a new additional ion source to produce
    negative helium beams. The project requires a major reconfiguration of ion sources at level 5 of the facility to
    accommodate three ion sources and upgrade the functional safety system to protect staff from the high voltage
    decks. Both the ESA and negative helium ion source will be supplied by National Electrostatics Corporation
    (NEC), with control components being a mix of NEC and ANU supplied components. Upon completion, the
    project will deliver improved sensitivity of Accelerator Mass Spectrometry for heavier nuclide detection and
    3He and 4He (alpha particles) that users are demanding for research problems ranging from fundamental
    investigations of the quantum mechanics of nuclei to medical applications.

    CAS Future Controls Direction and Development 20m
    
    The 10 MV tandem accelerator ANTARES in early 2000 was upgraded from a first generation bespoke control system, which largely relied on polled serial communications to VME and serial devices to an EPICS control system. In the following 20 years the EPICS control system has been expanded to manage more than the controls of ANTARES, such as logging facility radiation monitors, SF6 storage, users, etc. Though there have been some modifications to the controls infrastructure over time, the underlining networks, security, and hardware have become liabilities which require new solutions to meet modern requirements. This presentation will discuss these areas of concern along with new challenges faced with our new facilities and current directions. Feedback from the forum on the topics discussed is invited and appreciated.

    Accelerate Scientific Computations with FPGA 20m
    
    Traditional processors are hitting the clock frequency limit and thus, future significant increases in performance must come from parallel computations. FPGA has been shown to have the potential to speedup highly parallel applications. In addition, recent semiconductor technology provides sufficient FPGA resources to tackle scientific applications on large-scale parallel systems.
